I was very athletic in High School playing Baseball, Soccer and Tennis. Went to college and left all sports, gained some weight over the years. Decided to take charge and change my life I started Bodybuilding. Did traditional bodybuilding routine and nutrition for years. Started getting into Triathlons for more diversity. I found CrossFit by accident in 2008. I was researching off-season training for triathlons. I was also post injury from a bicycle accident which resulted in surgery to my optical socket.  I tried CrossFitting by following the main site and realized quickly that I didn’t have the equipment. I went to the only affiliate in Western Mass, PVCF. They were in Easthampton at the time. After about a year, I heard that they were moving to Northampton. Deciding that was too far to drive everyday. I took a deep breath, and decided that I should affiliate.   I became CrossFit Level 1 certified in October, 2009 and moved to my first location the floor space was 500 sq. ft.  with only 12 clients.  When we opened we were the 2nd CrossFit affiliate in Western Mass. We kept growing in March 2011 we moved into our current space which has over 4000 sq. ft of floor space.  Never did a triathlon since because CrossFit became my sport. I ran the SunTrust National Half Marathon in DC in April 2009.  I trained CrossFit only. I did only one training run which was 8 miles. Most of my runs in CrossFit were less than a mile. The reason that I started Swarm was to help as many people as I could.

I discovered Crossfit through a friend while I was in school to become a personal trainer in 2009. During that time I looked into it did some of the workouts and watched a lot of videos.  Upon this I was instantly hooked. I have competed in many sports such as football, rugby, track, and baseball, but coming into crossfit was a whole different experience for me. I would look at the main site (Crossfit.com) workouts, local gyms workouts and write them in my journal to do the following day (or at least try to).  I found Crossfit Swarm in 2010 when one of my own clients I was training told me about it.  I was given an opportunity to learn more about fitness at a different level.  I was also given a chance to help coach at Crossfit Swarm as well, where in the following winter I received the Level 1 certification.  I have been coaching/motivating people here for a few years now and everyday makes me even better.  I have gained so much more knowledge and met so many people from doing crossfit that I might not get anywhere else.  Getting introduced to Crossfit also introduced me to a variety of other sports as well such gymnastics, strongman, powerlifting, and olympic lifting, all of which have taught that i may be good at some of things i do in the gym but i won’t be great at one thing.

I began a yoga practice my freshman year of college that continues to this day. In my 20’s I started long distance running. Initially I began as a way to reduce stress. My husband was away for 13 months in Iwa Kuni, Japan and Okinawa as a Marine officer and I was in Massachusetts with our sons, an infant and a toddler. I continued running because I enjoyed the freedom it gave me to just be moving and not thinking . I ran distances ranging from 5K to 20K with 10K being my favorite. Over the years I did the following: tennis, volleyball , cross country skiing, aerobics, strength training using machines, golf, bicycle riding, hiking. However, I never considered myself an athlete. In my mind I was just exercising. I discovered CrossFit through Brian in 2009 , the owner/head trainer at CrossFit SWARM and I learned a whole new way to think and train. I was now in my late 50’s and about 15 pounds over my usual weight. I thought I was in good shape but that CrossFit warm-up showed me that I was not as fit and strong as I thought. With each day and WOD, I got stronger and leaner…those 15 pounds are long gone and have been replaced with muscles. I loved CrossFit from the start…Was it challenging? Absolutely! Was it boring? Never! There is a big difference between exercising and training. I had heel pain when running prior to joining CrossFit SWARM. Brian taught me new movements and how to become a more efficient runner. He had me switch to minimalist shoes and with his coaching the heel pain went away and has never returned. I have spent my whole life teaching: as an educator at the high school level, a special education administrator, a quilting instructor, a yoga teacher (I am Kripalu 200 hour certified), a mother, a grandmother. I wanted to share my passion and belief in the positive effects of CrossFit with others so I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Certification in April of 2010 at the age of 60. I love seeing others transform their lives, bodies and minds through training at our box. I CrossFit so I can have the energy to keep up with my 7 grandchildren and to be fit and healthy for many more years. I am proof that age is just a number. I find that CrossFit and Yoga meld well together. They are my Yin and Yang. They provide balance in my life. I also am Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED certified. CrossFit changed my life. It can also change yours.

I was born at a very early age. Played soccer and studied Kenpo Karate,Tai Chi, and Ba gua for 14 years. Fire Fighter for 17 years and counting. Was an Instructor at the Mass Fire Academy for 12 Years. Were I was certified in Group Exercise and Coaching. After injuring my hip and being told I would need a replacement by the time I was 45 I stopped exercising for 3 Years. When I was 20 pounds over weight and was out of breath climbing stairs, I tried CrossFit in 2010. After 1 year I had lost the weight, and forgot which Hip was injured. I found the intensity and ever changing dynamics that are a staple of CrossFit were a good fit for me. CrossFit allows me to discover my weaknesses and turn them into strengths. In 2012 Because of my background in group instruction, my focus on perfect form, and my ability to motivate. Brian asked me to assist with classes.

My name is Sabrina. At the gym you may also know me as “Lola”. I found CrossFit kind of late in life, but I only wish I had found it sooner! I was nearly 38 when I started. In my younger years, I was never an athlete. I was an average sized woman who struggled on and off with an extra 20 pounds all her life, especially after having kids. I always thought the ideal look was the skinny Victoria’s Secret model so I always felt my butt was too big and that I was too fat, and tried multiple diets to lose weight and achieve smaller numbers on the scale. I tried nearly every workout program out there, from Buns of Steel to 10-Minute Trainer to Planet Fitness, and many others in between. I didn’t “like” doing any of them but I did them because I felt I had to at least make an effort at exercising. None ever really produced any real or long-lasting results. And at the globo gym, I had NO idea what I was doing. I pretty much was on the elliptical machine or treadmill every day because I thought that boring, endless cardio sessions were the answer, and I had very little exposure to the weight machines. Not to mention the notion that had been drilled into my head all my life…that lifting weights would make me bulky! Enter CrossFit. I found it by a fluke, and I count my blessing for it every single day. From my very 1st workout with B, I was hooked. I knew that with guidance AND motivation from a trainer at every session, I could go further in my quest to get healthier. Who could get bored with a different workout every day? That makes things fun and exciting! As time passed, I learned about the Paleo lifestyle as well as the fitness aspect. When I began, I could not do a single pushup and I certainly could not do a single pull-up. Three years later at 41, I consider myself an athlete, and am in the best shape of my life, far better than what I was at even half my age. And what a journey it has been! As time passed, my strength, speed & stamina have grown continuously. I can now bang out large numbers of pushups, pullups and can throw around some pretty respectable numbers for weights. I have learned about the greatest fitness program I have ever come across, the mechanics of how to lift with good form, joined the most amazing community of people who share the same goals, and have learned more about nutrition than I ever dreamed possible. And most surprising to me? The fact that my “ideal” of aesthetic beauty changed from a skinny Victoria’s Secret model to being the healthiest, fittest, strongest, fastest woman I can be. I now aspire to have a big butt and thick thighs because they mean I am STRONG! Although I lost about 22 pounds since I began, I don’t feel the need to endlessly fight with the scale to determine my self-worth. I lift heavy-ass weights every day but am not “bulky” by anyone’s standards. Coming to the gym is not a chore – I LOVE IT! I am still seeing myself change and I continue to improve every day. I love working out here at CrossFit SWARM and have been doing competition training since this past April in order to take myself to the next level. And best of all, I love sharing my knowledge and my story with others; I have been involved with B’s internship program so I can become an Assistant Coach at SWARM.
