I was very athletic in high school playing Baseball, Soccer and Tennis. I went to college,  left all sports and gained some weight over the years. I decided to take charge and change my life so I started Bodybuilding. I did a traditional bodybuilding routine and nutrition program for years. I then started getting into Triathlons for more diversity. I found CrossFit by accident in 2008. I was researching off-season training for triathlons. I was also post injury from a bicycle accident which resulted in surgery to my optical socket.  I tried CrossFitting by following the main site and realized quickly that I didn’t have the equipment. I went to the only affiliate in Western Mass, PVCF. They were in Easthampton at the time. After about a year, I heard that they were moving to Northampton. Deciding that was too far to drive everyday. I took a deep breath, and decided that I should affiliate.  I became CrossFit Level 1 certified in October, 2009 and moved to my first location the floor space was 500 sq. ft. with only 12 clients.  When we opened we were the 2nd CrossFit affiliate in Western Mass. We kept growing in March 2011, and we moved into our current space which has over 4000 sq. ft of floor space.  I never did a triathlon since, because CrossFit became my sport. I ran the SunTrust National Half Marathon in D.C .in April 2009 and I trained CrossFit only for it. I did only one training run which was 8 miles long. Most of my runs in CrossFit were less than a mile. The reason that I started Swarm was to help as many people as I could get fitter, healthier, and happier.

I was born at a very early age. I played soccer and studied Kenpo Karate,Tai Chi, and Ba gua for 14 years. I’ve been Fire Fighter for 20 years and counting and was as an Instructor at the Mass Fire Academy for 12 Years where I was certified in Group Exercise and Coaching. After injuring my hip, and being told I would need a replacement by the time I was 45, I stopped exercising for 3 Years. When I ended up 20 pounds over weight and got out of breath climbing a flight of stairs, I decided to try CrossFit in 2010. After 1 year I had lost the 20 pounds of fat, and forgot which hip was injured. I found the intensity and ever changing dynamics that are a staple of CrossFit were a good fit for me. CrossFit allowed me to discover my weaknesses and turn them into strengths. In 2012 because of my background in group instruction, my focus on perfect form, and my ability to motivate, Brian asked me to coach.  Since them, I am diligent in continuing my education in coaching and CrossFit.

I discovered CrossFit through a good friend. My good friend was overweight and I thought if I started CrossFit with him it would keep him motivated to stay with it. Unfortunately he didn’t stick with it, but I was hooked. I’ve been with CrossFit Swarm from the beginning. When I first started CrossFit I loved the fast metcons and amraps. I hated the weight lifting part, mostly because I was to stubborn to listen to my coaches and fix my form. Over the years I’ve grown to like the weightlifting more and more.

I began a yoga practice my freshman year of college that continues to this day. In my 20’s I started long distance running. Initially I began as a way to reduce stress. My husband was away for 13 months in Iwa Kuni, Japan and Okinawa as a Marine officer and I was in Massachusetts with our sons, an infant and a toddler. I continued running because I enjoyed the freedom it gave me to just be moving and not thinking. I ran distances ranging from 5K to 20K with 10K being my favorite. Over the years I did the following: tennis, volleyball , cross country skiing, aerobics, strength training using machines, golf, bicycle riding, hiking. However, I never considered myself an athlete. In my mind I was just exercising. I discovered CrossFit through Brian in 2009 , the owner/head trainer at CrossFit SWARM and I learned a whole new way to think and train. I was now in my late 50’s and about 15 pounds over my usual weight. I thought I was in good shape but that CrossFit warm-up showed me that I was not as fit and strong as I thought. With each day and WOD, I got stronger and leaner…those 15 pounds are long gone and have been replaced with muscles. I loved CrossFit from the start…Was it challenging? Absolutely! Was it boring? Never! There is a big difference between exercising and training. I had heel pain when running prior to joining CrossFit SWARM. Brian taught me new movements and how to become a more efficient runner. He had me switch to minimalist shoes and with his coaching the heel pain went away and has never returned. I have spent my whole life teaching: as an educator at the high school level, a special education administrator, a quilting instructor, a yoga teacher (I am Kripalu 200 hour certified), a mother, a grandmother. I wanted to share my passion and belief in the positive effects of CrossFit with others so I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Certification in April of 2010 at the age of 60. I love seeing others transform their lives, bodies and minds through training at our box. I CrossFit so I can have the energy to keep up with my 7 grandchildren and to be fit and healthy for many more years. I am proof that age is just a number. I find that CrossFit and Yoga meld well together. They are my Yin and Yang. They provide balance in my life. I also am Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED certified. CrossFit changed my life. It can also change yours.

Where do I start…… Growing up in a Portuguese community, the women did not join in any sports or gyms. We were taught to cook and clean:  hence my OCD at the gym as you all probably see me cleaning daily. I struggled with my weight all the way through high school.  At 16, I met a boy (Bill) and wanted to impress him so I went on a crash diet of diet coke and smart food popcorn. It worked for a short time only like all diets. I was engaged by 19, married and had 3 children: which meant weight gain, no energy or motivation & unable to keep up with the kids.

I decided I had enough and joined a global gym for the 1st time of my life at age 30! I fell in love with boot camp classes; I wanted more so I started doing Insanity & P90X at home. I was a Beachbody Coach for 4 years but I got bored working out at home and so I searched for a gym that offered boot camp type classes daily. I came across a deal for CrossFit on Groupon and decided to just try it. My 1st class was filthy 50 and I was hooked!  Never looked back, that was 7 years ago.

About two and half years ago, I had the opportunity join in the ownership of Swarm. I was already helping with event planning and such so this made it official. I began assisting and love seeing the members working hard and pushing themselves. I always strive to continue my education

I joined SWARM as a member in October 2016.  Many people are amazed to learn that I have had quite a weight loss transformation.  I struggled with my weight as a teenager and found myself at the age of 21 weighing 352 pounds at a routine DR’s visit.  I was told I would end up in a wheelchair and the DR suggested weight loss surgery due to the excessive amount of weight I carried on my small 5’1 frame.  I was mortified and embarrassed, and knew it was time to make a change, but ALSO knew surgery was not my only option.  I found the will and motivation within myself to make a complete lifestyle change.  I joined Weight Watchers initially and after many years of ups and downs, including life changing events which lead to “off/program/on program” spirals –  finally recommitted to myself and my journey in June 2012 (starting this time at 308 lbs).  With renewed motivation and focus, I began a simple walking routine that turned quickly into a gym membership and slowly into a running habit and strength training routine.  In Oct 2013 I attended my first Zumba class and fell in love.  In July 2014 I became a licensed Zumba instructor and began teaching my own classes 6 days week.  By Nov 2014 (my 35th birthday) I stepped on the scale completely overwhelmed as I had achieved my personal goal of losing 200 pounds!  I weighed in at 151.9 and achieved a 200.5 lb weight loss!
Fast forward to today and one of my greatest achievements has been maintaining my successful weight loss.  Maintaining has proven just as hard (if not harder) than losing the weight. I continue to put in the conscious effort every single day with my food choices and am committed to getting my workouts in. This is my lifestyle and I love it! I eat real food, practice portion control, indulge in the occasional treat, but it’s getting right back on track that makes this sustainable and something I WANT to do forever. I love working out and staying active!
Joining our SWARM community was the best thing I ever did.  I felt welcome from my very first visit and the coaches are incredible!  They push you when you need it and always make sure your safety is #1.  They help correct your form and provide modifications to accommodate any ability until you are ready to progress.  I am absolutely in LOVE with how strong I am getting and seeing myself accomplish things I never thought possible!  Another thing that doesn’t compare to anything else is the camaraderie and the supportive friends I’ve made as part of our SWARM community.   I feel so lucky to be part of the SWARM coaching team now and have the opportunity to share my love for fitness & helping people through my newest class offering SWARMFit! “
One of my favorite quotes is “it’s not about perfect, it’s about effort.  And when you bring that effort every single day, that’s where transformation happens.  That’s how change occurs.” – Jillian Michaels
I was contacted in Jan 2017 by the producers of the DR. OZ show and was selected for a “Half Your Size” segment.  I was treated to NYC for the filming.  It was such an incredible opportunity and so much fun!  Truly amazing to be recognized for my hard work.  By sharing my story, I can only hope to inspire others out there that may be struggling – with anything – whether weight loss related to not.  I’m living proof that if you can find that fire – find YOUR WHY – and if you put your mind to it and you’re willing to put in the work EVERY SINGLE DAY – ANYTHING is possible!

I was also born at a very early age and as soon as I could walk would dance myself across a room. I danced all the way through college and then even after I got married, would still pop into some dance classes here and there. Once, married I got comfortable and gained quite a bit of weight. I yoyo’d between different gyms and programs and nothing ever seem to quite stick. I knew how to eat well, but found myself stuffing my face with poor choices. After having my daughter, gaining weight, and facing some auto immune issues, I had two choices; I could continue down the path I was on and hope something pharmaceutical could fix me, or get healthy and fit so my daughter could grow up with a healthy active mother.

I got really into health and wellness and found myself teaching Pre and Post-Natal exercise classes at Mercy Hospital and was certified in the Kur Method. During that time I also became a Zumba instructor and was starting to really feel fit again. I loved it except it was starting to take a toll on my body and I was in constant pain.

My husband (Coach Paul) had been coaching CrossFit for almost 4 years and honestly I was afraid of it and wanted nothing to do with it. I didn’t want to get bulky and thought lifting weights was dangerous etc. One day I came home from work in pain as usual and said to him maybe it’s time to try CrossFit. After a few months, I decided CrossFit was giving me more strength and less pain so I left Zumba and haven’t looked back. I was never pushed beyond safety, was given hands on coaching, and now lifting is my favorite. I am not bulky at all, and am proud of the muscles and strength I have been able to build over the years.

About two and half years ago, we had the opportunity join in the ownership of Swarm. I really missed teaching and started assistant coaching at Swarm. After assisting for a while, I went on to get my Level 1 certification and am certified in fitness nutrition through ISSA. I am constantly continuing my fitness and nutrition education to help people. I bring a lot of body alignment awareness into my coaching and have helped a lot of women who are pre and post-natal. I am very well versed in nutrition and how it can impact your body on a cellular level. There is no one diet fits all. I am always willing to help my clients find what that is that works best for them and get them on the path to longevity and health.

I wasn’t a high school or college athlete. When I was younger, my head was usually in a book. I started a family at a young age and working took up the better part of most days. Between nursing school, work, and kids, my weight crept up, as did depression. Although I was in obvious need of a change, it was a rheumatoid arthritis flare up in my knee that forced me to delve into my nutrition and drop the weight. I turned to cardio and it came off fast, but I was never happy with my body. Always chasing thin, never health, but I couldn’t be thin enough. Eventually, I decided to embrace my frame and started weight lifting. At first, just two 10lb dumbbells and videos in my living room. I slowly migrated over to a local, no pressure, no problem gym. After 6 months, I decided to get more serious and trade the smith machine in for a squat rack. I signed up at a much bigger local gym, but was only a member for about 3 weeks before I got bored being the only girl lifting, so I decided to try out Swarm’s Unlimited 2 month membership. We were a match! It wasn’t until I found CrossFit that I realized how amazing a body can be, not because of how it looks, but because of what it can do. I hope I can help others realize the same.

I started CrossFit at age 17 the summer before my senior year of high school, I had always been apart of a gym but always did my own thing and wasn’t really sure how to go about getting intense workouts. Iv been riding horses competitively my whole life since the age of three and played soccer and hockey growing up. Both my parents did CrossFit and pushed me to join the closest gym which happened to be swarm! I came into my first class barley weighing 100 pounds and with no experience. I fell in love with the Olympic lifts and the safe place that the gym began to feel like for me. With the guidance of coach Paul who slowly began to push me athletically out of my comfort zone, and constantly told me to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” I became apart of swarms competition team and have never looked back or regretted my decision to step into the CrossFit gym.

In January of 2016, I stumbled upon CrossFit Swarm after a friend suggested trying it out together.  As a wife and mom to two active little boys, a math teacher and distance runner, I did not see how I could fit anything else into my busy schedule.  My friend and I agreed to go for two months only, but as soon as we had our first class, we knew we would never leave.  Now, I am up before my 4:15 alarm every day and anxious to get in there with our Swarm community.  Rather than find a way for CrossFit to fit into my schedule, I now find myself trying to fit everything else around my CrossFit schedule.

I was a runner through high school and college, a track and field coach, and had run the Boston Marathon in 2005 and 2006.  After having kids, running had become more of a stress reliever for me and less of a competitive sport.  CrossFit has brought back that desire to work hard again.  Now in my 30’s, while training for the 2017 Chicago Marathon, I have found my long runs to be stronger and faster than they ever were before.

As soon as I started at Swarm, all I wanted to do was practice each movement again and again.  I would watch videos of movements, read CrossFit Journal, watch others at class, study the Level 1 Training Manual, absorb every piece of advice from our coaches at the gym and go home and practice.  I eventually built up enough equipment at home to be able to do extra accessory work and practice in my garage.  My two boys have their own (appropriately and adorably scaled) equipment and love to work out along side me.  It feels amazing to be confident in my body, but hearing my boys talk about me as their strong and healthy mom is even better.

The mom and the teacher in me is so excited to share my love of CrossFit and help anyone who is ready to give it a try.  I had no idea the impact CrossFit would have on my life, but now I cannot imagine being without it.

At the time I found CrossFit in 2013, I was fighting an upward battle with anxiety/ depression, low self-esteem, and a muddy idea of self-worth. The only times I felt good about myself was through accomplishments in the gym. However, the bodybuilding regimen I followed was met more with frustration and plateaus than actual progress. I stumbled upon Crossfit via Instagram and immediately became obsessed. It wasn’t until a year later that I was able to get my foot in the door of a real CF gym but once I did I knew there was no turning back. The welcoming community and connection through suffering within a CF box is unparallel to any other gym.

CrossFit appealed to me because being strong and lifting weights (which I love) was not only accepted but encouraged as a female. It’s one of the only sports where women are treated equally to their male counterparts.

After having done CrossFit for the past three years I’ve gained more than just deadlift PR’s and traps, but confidence in who I am as a person and respect for not just how my body looks but what it can do. The awesome people you meet and friendships you make are just an added bonus!
